Spiritual Meditation Techniques
Now that we’ve covered all about getting started with your meditation practice it’s time to introduce some actual techniques. These techniques will help you to tap into your inner wisdom and connect to the spiritual world on a deeper level, let’s begin with our first examples for you to try:
Prayer: Prayer is a common spiritual meditation technique that involves reciting specific prayers or chants that are meaningful to the individual. It is a way of connecting to a higher power or consciousness and expressing gratitude, asking for guidance or seeking comfort and strength. Many different spiritual traditions incorporate prayer as a central part of their practice, of which some prayers and chants can be adapted to suit individual beliefs and values.
Mantra meditation: Mantra meditation is a technique where you repeat a word or phrase that holds spiritual significance to you. For instance, the sound “Om” is sacred in many spiritual traditions (in Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism), and it’s believed to be associated with connecting all living beings to nature and the universe. Also known as the first sound of the universe.
Contemplative meditation: Contemplative meditation involves reflecting on spiritual or religious texts, such as scripture or poetry, and contemplating their meaning and significance.
Loving-kindness meditation: Loving-kindness meditation involves cultivating feelings of love and compassion towards oneself and others, and can be practised as a way to connect with the divine nature of all beings.
Transcendental Meditation (TM): Transcendental Meditation involves the repetition of a specific mantra for 20 minutes, twice a day, to achieve a deep state of relaxation and inner peace. The mantra used in TM is intended to help the practitioner transcend or go beyond the active thinking mind and access a deeper level of awareness or consciousness. TM is typically administered by a trained teacher and has been studied extensively to have known and extensive benefits.
Yoga: Yoga is an ancient practice that combines physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation to cultivate a deeper connection and create harmony among the mind, body and spirit. Meditation is an integral part of yoga practice, that involves bringing attention to a particular component e.g. the breath or a mantra. Meditation in yoga enables yogis to cultivate a deeper understanding of themselves and their connection to the world around them
Visualisation: Visualisation techniques involve creating mental images that represent spiritual concepts, such as imagining oneself surrounded by a white light or connecting with a divine presence.
In the end, the best way to determine which meditation technique is right for you is to explore and experiment with different techniques. By doing so, you can find the one that resonates with you the most and helps you connect with your spirituality in a powerful and meaningful way. So don’t be afraid to try new things and trust your intuition when it comes to choosing the technique that works best for you!
How to create a meditation practice that works for you
Below is a simple foundation to get you started with your first meditation practice. Feel free to make changes, add to it, and build upon it with all the helpful suggestions we have outlined previously (and more advice that we have to come!).
- Choose a comfortable position: Find a comfortable position that allows you to sit still for an extended period without discomfort. You can sit cross-legged on a cushion, floor or chair with your feet firmly planted on the ground. Try to keep your back straight and rest your hands on your lap. You can even lie down if that feels most comfortable for you.
- Experience the process: Let go of any expectations or judgments about the meditation process and simply allow yourself to experience it as it unfolds. Focus on the sensations in your body, your breath, and any other sensory experiences that arise.
- Acknowledge the thoughts: It’s common for the mind to wander during meditation, and that’s okay. Rather than trying to suppress or ignore your thoughts, acknowledge them without judgment and then gently guide your attention back to your breath or chosen focus.
- Utter a prayer: Out loud or in your mind, say a prayer at the start, end or repeatedly throughout your meditation session. This can help to ground you and connect you to your spiritual beliefs.
- Reflect on yourself: After your meditation session, take a few moments to reflect on your experience. Notice any changes in your body or mind, and consider how the practice is impacting your overall state, and your thoughts or feelings.
What is guided Meditation?
Guided meditation is a practice in which an individual is led through a meditation session by a teacher, guide, or audio recording. During a guided meditation, the individual is prompted to focus on specific thoughts, feelings, or visualisations that are designed to deepen their spiritual connection and foster a sense of inner peace, clarity, and purpose.
Guided meditations for spiritual practice often incorporate themes or intentions related to a particular spiritual tradition, such as compassion, forgiveness, or gratitude. The guide may also use specific mantras, prayers, or visualisations to help the individual connect with their spirituality or higher power. They can be especially helpful for beginners or those who find it challenging to quiet their minds during meditation. The guidance can help to keep the individual focused and engaged, and provide a framework for their practice. Guided meditations can be found online or through apps, or may be offered in group settings by spiritual teachers or leaders.
Guided meditation for beginners
Check out this beginner-friendly guided meditation example that can help you connect with your higher consciousness and deepen your spiritual practice:
- Start by finding a comfortable seated position with your back straight and your feet firmly planted on the ground. Take a few deep breaths, inhaling deeply through your nose and exhaling through your mouth.
- Close your eyes and visualize a bright, white light surrounding your entire body. Imagine this light is connected to a higher consciousness or spiritual power that is always present and available to you.
- As you continue to breathe deeply, allow yourself to sink into a state of deep relaxation. Release any tension in your body, and feel yourself becoming more and more centred and grounded.
- Focus your attention on your heart centre. Imagine a glowing ball of light at the centre of your chest, radiating warmth and love.
- Repeat the following mantra silently to yourself: “I am connected to a higher consciousness that guides and supports me. I trust in the wisdom of the universe to guide me on my spiritual path.”
- Visualise yourself standing in a beautiful natural setting, such as a forest or by the ocean. Feel the power and beauty of nature surrounding you, and imagine that you are one with all living beings.
- Allow any thoughts or feelings that arise to simply pass by like clouds in the sky. Remember that you are connected to something greater than yourself and that you are always supported and guided.
- When you are ready to end the meditation, take a few deep breaths and slowly open your eyes. Take a moment to reflect on your experience, and set an intention to carry the feeling of connectedness and spiritual awareness with you throughout your day.
Chakras and Meditation
Chakras are energy centres in the body that are often associated with spiritual meditation. There are seven main chakras that are believed to run along the spine, each corresponding to different aspects of our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves.
In spiritual meditation, chakras can be used as a tool to help individuals become more attuned to their inner selves and connect with their spirituality. Each chakra is associated with specific qualities, such as love, communication, and intuition, and meditating on these qualities can help to activate and balance the corresponding chakra.
Here are some ways to incorporate chakras into your spiritual meditation practice:
- Start by focusing on your breath and bringing your attention to your body. Visualise each chakra as a spinning wheel of energy, starting with the root chakra at the base of your spine and moving up through the crown chakra at the top of your head.
- Spend some time meditating on each chakra, focusing on its corresponding qualities and how they relate to your life. For example, when meditating on the heart chakra, you might focus on feelings of love and compassion for yourself and others.
- Use visualisation techniques to help activate and balance each chakra. For example, you might imagine a warm, glowing light at each chakra point, or visualize each chakra spinning faster and brighter with each inhale and exhale.
- Consider using mantras or affirmations that are associated with each chakra. For example, for the throat chakra, you might repeat the affirmation “I speak my truth with clarity and confidence.”
- Incorporate movement or yoga poses that are associated with each chakra. For example, the tree pose is often used to activate the root chakra, while the cobra pose is associated with the heart chakra.
Remember, working with chakras is a personal and intuitive practice, and what works for one person may not work for another. It’s important to listen to your body and intuition and to approach your practice with openness and curiosity.
Using Crystals for meditation
Crystals are often used in spiritual meditation as a tool to help focus and amplify energy. Each crystal is believed to have its own unique energy and healing properties and can be used to enhance specific aspects of your spiritual practice.
Here are some ways to incorporate crystals into your spiritual meditation practice:
- Choose a crystal that resonates with your intentions and goals for your meditation practice. For example, amethyst is often used for spiritual growth and intuition, while rose quartz is associated with love and compassion.
- Hold the crystal in your hand or place it on your body, focusing your attention on its energy and the intention you have set for your meditation. Take a moment to notice its shape, colour and texture.
- Use the crystal as a focal point for your meditation, allowing it to guide you deeper into your practice and help you connect with your spirituality.
- Incorporate the crystal into other aspects of your practice, such as visualisations or affirmations. For example, you might visualize a bright, glowing light radiating from the crystal and filling your body with its energy.
- Visualise the energy of the crystal flowing into your body, filling you with its healing properties and amplifying your intentions. You might imagine a bright light emanating from the crystal and spreading throughout your body, or a warm energy radiating from the crystal and surrounding you like a protective shield.
- Hold your attention on the crystal and your intention for as long as you like, allowing yourself to sink deeper into a meditative state. If your mind starts to wander or you become distracted, gently bring your attention back to the crystal and your breath.
- When you are ready to end your meditation, take a few deep breaths and gently open your eyes. Take a moment to notice how you feel, and thank the crystal for its energy and support.
